The following are just some of the letters of condolence that Local 867 has received.  We will attempt to put more on the Web Site over the Course of the next few days.

On behalf of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg (UFFW) and the families of our deceased heroes thank you to all those who have sent emails and left telephone messages of condolence and support. I am sure you can appreciate that it is just impossible to return all these expressions of support at this time but it is extremely important to Alex and the UFFW executive board and members that you all know that he has received your messages and how much they are appreciated.
On behalf of my family I would like to send our condolences to the families of Captain Nichols and Captain Lessard, and also the Winnipeg Fire Department.
We suffered a great loss in our family March 17, 2005 when my brother, Kevin Olson, died in the line of duty in Yellowknife, NWT, alongside his lieutenant Cyril Fyfe.
I know how you all are feeling right now.

Just remember this - you have family and friends around that will always be there for a hug and a shoulder to lean on and the brotherhood of firefighters are amazing at times like this. These 2 men could not have picked a better profession to be recognized and honored in the way that they will be. They are both definitely deserving of the 'heros' farewell and memorial ceremonies that will follow in the next couple of years of all of your lives. (Colorado Springs, IAFF and Ottawa, CFFF)
Its not how they died that makes them heros, its how they lived their lives.
Always Remembered, Never ForgotteN
Thinking of you all.
Christina Olson

Calgary, AB

Just wanted to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the Family, Friends, and Co-Workers of the fallen fire fighters. You will always be in our prayers and in our thoughts.

From:The Rolling River First Nation Volunteer Firefighters in Manitoba

On behalf of my family and myself, I wish to extend to the families of the fallen heros, sincere and deeply felt condolences at this tragic time. To the workplace families, those Brothers and Sisters who are still facing danger and continue to serve I also extend my condolences.

When we lose a Brother we feel a deep sense of loss, when we lose two at once this loss is not doubled but it is ten-fold in pain and suffering. My thanks for the dedication of the members of Local 867 who persevere to protect our lives and hope that such a tragedy will never be repeated.

Also, on behalf of all worker safety representatives and committee members who struggle on a daily basis to make their workplaces safer through prevention of injuries and removal of hazards, we offer condolences and dedicate ourselves to Mourn for the Dead and Fight for the Living. On April 28, we will once again remember our Brothers and Sisters.

Pete Walker, Manitoba Federation of Labour

Health and Safety Representative.

On behalf of the citizens and government of Manitoba, I wish to convey to you and to all firefighters in the province my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of two of our brothers.  I would also like to send our thoughts and prayers to those who remain in hospital.

There is a unique bond among the men and women who participate in your line of work - one created out of cooperation and respect for the real dangers you face on a day-to-day basis.  When one of your own is lost or injured, it is devastating to the entire group and is a reminder to all Manitobans of the risks that firefighters face so bravely every day.  It is at these moments when the bond that exists between firefighters is called upon most and will be the source of strength and solace during this devastating time.

On behalf of all Manitobans, I commend all Manitoba firefighters for their excellent work in helping to protect our citizens each and every day.  All Manitobans join with me in expressing our deep sadness about yesterday's tragedy.  Our thoughts are with you and our pride has never been greater.

Respectfully,

Gary Doer

On behalf of the PC Caucus of Manitoba, please accept my deepest condolences to you and your colleagues of the tragic deaths of your fellow firefighters at the house fire in St. Boniface last night.

There is no question you and your colleagues are owed a tremendous amount of gratitude for the dangerous situations each of you face every day.

This tragic incident should serve as a reminder to us all how very thankful we should be as citizens of this community for the dedication and sacrifices made by our emergency personnel, whether they be firefighters, police officers or paramedics.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, the families of the victims and with those recovering from their injuries.

Huch McFadyen

Leader of the Official Opposition

On behalf of my mother and I, we wish to convey our deepest sympathies to families, friends and fellow firefighters of Captain's Lessard and Nichols. These two fine men paid the ultimate sacrifice. Their valor and commitment in protecting the citizens of Winnipeg will never be forgotten.

On Behalf of the 230 men and women of the Markham Fire and Emergency Services (Ontario) I would like to extend our deepest sympathies in your loss of Captains Lessard and Thomas. This is such a tragedy for the families of these two firefighters and the Winnipeg fire department. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

My husband retired from the WFPS as Captain last April, and knew both firefighters who died so tragically on February 4/07. I told him I felt the perfect way to honour Capt Harold Lessard & Capt Thomas Nichols was to name the new February holiday "ST. FLORIAN DAY".
St. Florian is "The Patron Saint of Firefighters". What a perfect way to remember these two heroes & all the firefighters that risk their lives to keep us safe.

Please accept our sincere condolences on the tragic loss Captain Nichols and Captain Lessard. Our thoughts and prays are with them and their families at these very trying times. We will continue to pray for the recovery of the injured Firefighters.

Dear Bothers and Sisters,
I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.  We here in Green Bay experienced our first fire related death last year so I can truly say I know the pain you are all feeling.  If there is anything we here in Green Bay can do for you we are just a phone call away.  My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with the families of those brave men and with all of you still doing the job everyday.  I wish I could say that the pain gets better but I can not.  All I can say is that, with the support from all your brothers and sisters in the IAFF it does get easier and there is a sense of comfort knowing that they are there for all of you.
Fraternally,

On behalf of the residents of the area around Fire Station Number 1,  I would like to extend our condolences to the families of firefighters who were involved in the Saint-Boniface fire as well as to the members of Local 867. We knew Captain Lessard and some of the Winnipeg Station 1 Firefighters as they have often come to our summer block parties to meet the area's children. The Station 1 Firefighters are part of our neighbourhood and we appreciate everything that they provide. Thanks to all members of Local 867 for the dedicated service that they provide. Our thoughts are with you.

On behalf of the members of West St. Paul Fire Department please accept this message of condolence for your two fallen brothers and there families.

West St. Paul Fire Fighters

It is with great sadness that I write to you on behalf of the Ship’s Company of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship WINNIPEG, currently at sea off the west coast of Canada.  When my ship’s company heard of your recent tragic loss, memories of our visit with your firefighters last May came rushing back.  Your hospitality to a crew returning from duty overseas during that visit was selfless, honest, and professional.  Nothing has changed, and your firefighters lost their lives displaying these same traits.

Although physically removed by several Provinces, the city of Winnipeg, its firefighters, and our chosen charity (The Firefighters Burn Fund Inc.), are never far from our thoughts.  If there is anything my crew, particularly my embarked firefighters, can do to help your team and their families through this trying time, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Commander Dermot Mulholland

Commanding Officer

HMCS WINNIPEG

On behalf of the Men & Women at ProFireFighter.Com / Unions-America.Com we wish to express our deepest concern and heartfelt sympathy to the families, officers, and firefighters on the recent loss of your member.

There are times when words fail to convey the depths of brotherly feeling, when in this dangerous service, some men are called upon to pay the extreme penalty, which the work exacts.

There are no words really.  My deepest condolences on the loss of your colleagues as they courageously carried out their duties. Best wishes and hopes for a sustained recovery of those injured, and lots of love and sympathies to the families of the deceased.

God Bless

Victor Andres, RN BN

Just wanted to offer our very sincere condolences to you, your members and the families of our fallen brothers.  We know the extraordinary effort you and your executive board are undertaking to ensure the families of our fallen are well cared for.  These responsibilities, plus the ever-present media attention, plus the many queries from other concerned locals can take a heavy toll on you, your executive and your office staff, not to mention your own families.   If there is anything at all that we can do to assist, here in Calgary, please do not hesitate to ask.  We would be pleased to send a fresh body or two to help manage the workload.

On behalf of your brothers and sisters in Calgary, hang in there, Alex.  Our thoughts are with you guys.

My sincerest condolences to the members of the Winnipeg Fire Department at your tragic loss of two members and the injury to four others.  As a retired fire captain and the father of an active FireFighter/Paramedic, we can relate to your loss and at the same time understand your will and desire to carry on in your chosen profession despite the great loss to your department.

The fallen and injured members, the other members of your department and all your families are being thought of, remembered and supported with all our hearts. The greater fire community is there with you.

Your loss is deep and painful. However those two Fire Captains are now looking down upon you from a better place, free of pain and discomfort.  They would want you to carry on as they would have done, had they not been called by God to man the greatest fire hall in heaven. So as you struggle with your losses and provide comfort to the families, remember they are okay.  Their work here on earth was done.

As you shed a tear, please also smile as you remember them for who they were, what they gave to you and your community and what they stood for.

God Bless you all and may God be with you, as we are, at this time.

Respectfully,

Terry

Words can not express the sadness at such incredible loss.  With both a husband, and also a son  who are firefighters on Winnipeg’s force, I have great respect for each firefighter and their calling.  While knowing that there is always potential danger that may lurk around the corner, it never became more evident than on Sunday when we started to hear the news as it came across the stations.  We have been praying for the families of the deceased as well as for the firefighters in hospital.  I know that the extended family of firefighters is a tight one, and there is a strong support among them.  The road ahead will be a long one, but we will continue to pray for God’s peace and comfort, and for the recovery of healing for those in hospital.  Please extend our condolences and support to the families.  We share in your grief.

Joy Klassen

Our prayers are with you.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the wives and families of the firefighters who so tragically lost their lives, to those firefighters who attended the fire and all firefighters on all platoons. It is so tragic that this has happened! We don’t realize how fragile life is until we are faced with tragedies such as this.  Firefighters are a family- they support each other through the good times and the bad times and sadly this is one of those times. They are “Heroes” every day of their lives- putting their lives on the line each and every day. The following appropriately describes these firefighters-

Ordinary heroes walk among us with uncommon bravery and profound care; they appear in our lives without warning or fanfare. Some wear uniforms and carry badges, some do not, but all wear the armour of integrity, compassion, courage and honour. Heroes put the needs of others before their own.  Their names and deeds are seldom spoken of, rarely heard. Without a blare of trumpets or cheering crowd, they become heroes unaware by making a decision in an instant, acting on the spur of the moment, or working tirelessly to rescue, comfort, or to be a voice for those who have none. Heroes work to safeguard our world. They know that great things come from a series of small actions. They recognize a need and fill it. They know how to protect and defend so that others may live. Heroes are defiant in their mission. Their values are never for sale. The world may know little of its greatest heroes, but in our hearts we know who they are. Heroes touch humanity through their love and compassion- they give up so much of themselves and ask for so little in return. They brave each day with courage, compassion and integrity and make our world a far better place in which to live.

Dedicated with honour and compassion to all the “heroes” of the UFFW-  to those who have gone before us and those who are currently with us!- Love Deb Woodman (widow of Jim Woodman #962)

I believe that his 'family' extended to his platoon, and I wish to send my condolences to each & every firefighter.  You have obviously lost one of the good ones!
May he be the 'guardian' to all from up above!
My thoughts are with Tom's family and his 'family' of firefighters!

11th District Vice President

As most of you are aware by now Winnipeg tragically suffered 2 fire deaths yesterday in a residential house fire due to flashover. With President Colburn’s request and co-operation from the Mayor, flags were allowed to be lowered to half staff until the funerals of our fallen Brothers. We gratefully thank Mayor McMullan for allowing us this display of support to our fallen Brothers. Those of us whom have been around long enough remember when similar requests have been denied. Thanks to Brothers Carpenter and Harding for co-ordinating this.

Winnipeg has for several years had a special bond for us through their support of  IAFF District 13 V.P. Bruce Carpenter and our relationship with their Executive Board. EPC reps have come to know several of the Winnipeg members through their attendance at our educational seminars and extended this bond. We all extend our thoughts and prayers to all their members and families.

Please accept our heart felt condolences from the Officers and Members of the Moose Factory Island Fire & Rescue to the members of the UFFW and to the families of the fallen Brothers. Our thoughts will be to the families of the Injured Firefighters this day, and we wish them a speedy and complete recovery.  In this day of satellite communications and instant "news", it breaks our hearts to hear of our Brothers and Sisters falling while answering the call for help. With certainty, there will be some apprehension and thoughts of "there by the grace of God go I" as we don our bunker gear to face the fires, but a great peace of mind knowing that, sitting at the right hand of God, there are two more of our Brothers watching out for us as we answer the calls.

In this time of sorrow and mourning, please remember that you and the families are not alone, but an International Family, a Brotherhood, is beside you feeling the loss and lending their prayers as well.

Respectfully and Humbly,

I realize the last thing you probably wish to read at this time is another message expressing sympathy, as they do very little to ease the pain of of last nights tragedy. However, on behalf of Company 6-3, we wish send our regrets to the families, friends, and brothers of the injured firefighters. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with the men and women at stations #1 and #2, as we could not imagine the pain and sadness of losing member at an alarm. To all members of the Winnipeg firefighting community and to the families and friends of the two  firefighters you just lost, and those who were injured, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy.  Everyone calls firefighters heroes, but I don't think most people really know just how true that is.  I lost my sister, her husband, and their three young children in a house fire, and although  the firefighters who responded were unable to save them, they are still heroes.  Anyone who goes to work every day knowing that they might give their life trying to save someone else's is a remarkable person. How sad that most of us only acknowledge that bravery when something like this happens.  I want you and your brothers to know that I never pass a fire station without thinking of what you guys risk every day.  I share your grief and offer you my profound gratitude for what you do.

We were very shocked to hear of the tragedy in St Boniface. I am writing on behalf of the Fire Fighters of the Northwest Territories, Canada to express our sadness and to let you know that we stand by you in this time of pain.

I know that the support of Fire Fighters the world over was gratefully received by the Yellowknife Department in their time of loss, and having attended four funerals of close friends lost in the line of duty myself in my career I know that this support lends some slight relief to the pain.

It is my hope that you pass these condolences on to your Department and the family of these fire fighters so that they may know that their larger family is behind them at this sad time.

Stay strong, move forward and never forget!

Take care

I wished to express my heartfelt sympathy to the families and colleagues who lost their loved ones in this terrible horrific tragedy & was unsure how to send this thru their local Fire Hall Stations, so I found this site & wish you could forward this on.
I just wish that these brave heroic Captains and the men who were injured...did not have to be in there, and that by faith of god, they could have just gotten out of there in time, but who was to know this terrible flash ball/flashover would ever happen.
I am just shocked and dismayed in these sorry, sad time...I wish they could have listened to the families children, that there was no one in there, however all day, I hear they had to follow protocol, & make sure no one was in there. There is nothing we can say or do to change the events of this tragic outcome...my hearts go out to all the fire and paramedics, rescue workers, armed forces, medic, hospital workers and nurses, doctors, police and all the professions, but especially the firefighters of our city, province and country..they are our saviors, they are our Angels of god who help us day in and day out, and I am grateful and thankful for the courage and all the hard work they do, to save peoples lives, and help our communities.
God bless the families of the victims, particular the children and spouses, sisters or brothers, fathers or mothers, close friends, also the families of the injured, and the colleagues of all the firefighters and their families, for they put their life in harms way, so professional and caring, we thank you, and our prayers are always with you..always. God Bless.
They deserve more than just recognition...they are our Heroes, always, and thank you from the bottom of my heart, always.
I am just an ordinary citizen of Wpg., caring and sad, & my heart is heavy too, with grieve for all.

I always find that as a journalist some stories are much more difficult to cover than others.  The tragic death of 2 Fire fighters ranks among the most difficult and tragic events I have had to cover in my career, but I believe coverage is important so Canadians can see the risks taken every day by the men and women who fight fires across the country.  Please accept deepest sympathies from me and my colleagues, and know that our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and those still recovering in hospital.
