Negotiations

Date:            November 3, 2009

To:              All Members of Local 867

From:           Alex Forrest, President, Chair Negotiating Committee

Negotiations Report

Our contract expires on December 26th of this year.  We began our preparations for negotiations of last year and then worked through the summer and presented proposals for the membership’s approval at the September General Membership Meeting.

As part of our preparations we compiled a brief of all Fire Fighter contracts, agreements and arbitrations concerning wages and benefits.  We also met with all branches and heard their issues.  When appropriated we incorporated these issues into our proposals.

We also heard numerous presentations by individual members of Local 867 and received comments and ideas from members via email and facebook.  As a matter of fact I received the most comments from facebook.  I would like to thank all of the members who took the time to contact me.  We have included many of your comments in our proposals.

We exchanged proposals in early October and since then we have been doing research and preparation concerning the City’s proposals.  We are now in Joint Negotiations with the City.

The Negotiations Team from the City is almost entirely new, with the exception of Human Resource Specialist Josée Fernandez.  We have had a good relationship with Josée in recent Labour/Management relations and she was a very positive influence during the recent interview process and hiring of the Director of Training.  We hope to build upon this relationship and come to an agreement that both sides are satisfied with.

Our Negotiations Committee is comprised of Alex Forrest, Dave Naaykens, Rob Labossiere, Russ Morrow, Al Gray and Jim Hemphill.  Our negotiations strategy is to have a very strong team assisting the Negotiations Committee with research and preparation.  Tom Bilous, Chad Swayze and Bruce Duncan have been tasked with research and have become instrumental in our preparations.

I would like to thank Rob Campbell, Julian DeGrave and Derek Balcaen for also helping with our preparations.  They have been able to step into many roles of the Executive when negotiations pulls us away from the regular duties of the Executive.  Derek Balcaen in particular has been doing excellent research on our PCP program and how we can support our members who are in this role, especially in regards to education and proper remuneration for the expertise and responsibilities that go along with the PCP program.

In conclusion, I have to caution the membership about expectations.  We have been extremely successful in our last three contracts but this time we are facing some very tough economic conditions.  However, we guarantee the membership that we will put all our efforts and resources into securing a contract.

Welfare Committee Report

by

Robert Campbell

This year the UFFW Local 867 Annual Picnic was held on July 22nd  at Fun Mountain.  We used our rain date and it worked out great!  Out of the five or six sunny days we have had this summer, we picked one of them.  No rain!!  No bugs!!  Great food, old acquaintances, new friends.

Speaking of great food, I'd like to thank Brent Jervis and his BBQ gang, Curtis Collins, Gord Miller, and Ken Holliday.  The food was cooked to perfection.  Al Bartley did a great job calling all the races.  My personal favourite was the Women's Grocery Scramble - just get the hell out of the way once they start running.  There were no injuries reported in this year's Scramble!  I am proud to say I was also a participant at this year's picnic, participating in the age 50 and over 100 yard dash.  Well it might have only been 35 yards, but it felt like 100!  Anyway, I came in second, considering there were only two of us ....... I finished the race.  I'll get you next time Menno.  Photo finish!

Chad Swayze did a great job organizing the booking, purchasing, etc., making this year's picnic a huge success.  I would also like to thank all volunteers who came out and helped us.  We hope to see them all next year.

Just a reminder that the Banquet and Ball will be held on November 21st 2009 at the Hotel Fort Garry Grand Ballroom.  More information will follow.

If any member is aware of another member who has had a child, been off sick for an extended period of time or lost a loved one, please contact Chad or myself.  Chad can be reached on his cell (299-5285) or at 11 Station, 3 Platoon or cswayze@uffw.ca.  I can be reached on my cell (799-1726) or at 18 Station, 2 Platoon or rescuefour@mts.net.

I hope everyone has a great Indian Summer.  "Stay thirsty my friends".
