Special thanks to fire fighters for supporting Muscular Dystrophy Canada for over 50 years.

WALK FOR MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

The Winnipeg Walk for Muscular Dystrophy took place on May 29th and was a day of fun, fellowship and fundraising for a good cause!

This family fun event  also included a light lunch, refreshments and prizes for top fundraisers following the walk.

City Councillor John Orlikow, who represents River Heights, braved the rain and joined UFFW Executive Jim Hemphill, Al Gray, Derek Balcaen, Chad Swayze and Tom Bilous on June 29th at the walk, which took place at Kildonan Park. Also in the picture is Kathy Harbeck of MD Canada.

Final Update from the Rooftop

TJ Belluk, Chad Swayze, Rob Campbell & Joel Savard would like to thank all who supported this effort to raise awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy.

A lot of guys donated their own time during our Osborne street boot drives and this is where a lot of our money came from. You guys were amazing, running through traffic, and the public was very receptive to your being there.

The local restaurants were very generous and we appreciate all they provided. We'll send out an update of all involved and hope that you will use their services and mention their support of this event.

If anyone has any corporate contacts that may want to get involved next year, please let us know.

This first time event was a huge success and it couldn't have happened without a lot of help from many individuals. The ultimate goal is funding, for equipment and for research. In saying that, if every person on our job donated just ten dollars, that would add $15000 to our total, which would go a long way in helping families living with Muscular Dystrophy.

In closing we want to thank you all for helping to get the word out and donating to this cause.

See you next year.

Four Winnipeg firefighters are camping out for a cause.

Firefighters T.J. Belluk, Robert Campbell, Joel Savard and Chad Swayze climbed up to the roof of Fire Station #4 in Osborne Village at 10 a.m. Monday, and they plan to stay there until they reach their goal of raising $50,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

“They said they’re willing to stay up here as long as it takes and I know firefighters — they don’t give up. So we’ll be up here till we raise our money,” said United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg president Alex Forrest. “We’ve always had great support and we know we know we’re going to be able to raise a lot of money.”

Winnipeg firefighters have been fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Canada for more than half a century, but it was a challenge from another fire department that made them embark on this novel fundraising event.

“Edmonton has challenged us to raise more funds than them and they kicked off (Monday) as well,” said Swayze.

It’s Edmonton’s sixth year camping out for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

“We’re happy to be doing this and the guys are having a lot fun as well,” said Forrest.

The off-duty firefighters are living in a large tent provided by Cabela’s Canada.

The campers were well on their way to the target as they had raised almost $5,000 by Monday afternoon. Mayor Sam Katz visited the campers and donated $180 to the cause on behalf of the city.

Donations can be made at any city fire hall and the camping firefighters will also be lowering a firefighter’s boot down from their perch to collect funds from visitors and passersby.

Re:                  Rooftop Campout for Muscular Dystrophy

Firefighters have always been and will continue to be the biggest supporters of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

There are four Firefighters camped on the roof of Station # 4 and they will be there until Friday hoping to achieve their goal of raising awareness of Muscular Dystrophy and accepting donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Edmonton and Strathcona County are kicking off their campout today and a friendly rivalry exists to see who can raise most funds for Muscular Dystrophy.  Donations can be made at any Winnipeg Fire Hall.

Also, on March 9th between 7 and 10am and 3 and 5pm, in the area around #4 Station in Osborne Village, Firefighters will be having a Bootdrive to collect funds for and raise awareness of Muscular Dystrophy.

Re:                  Unique Fire Fighter Fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Canada

From the beginning, Fire Fighters have been raising funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.  They give hope to thousands of Canadians with muscular dystrophy. They inspire generosity and bring awareness to neuromuscular disorders.

Fire Fighters are the biggest supporters of Muscular Dystrophy Canada and they always have been.

Now Winnipeg Fire Fighters have embarked on a fundraiser in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.   On March 8, 2010 a small group of courageous fire fighters will be lifted up to the roof of the fire hall on Osborne Street to camp out until they reach their lofty fundraising goal.  Spending day and night in the cold wind and snow, the group will eat and sleep on the roof in a large tent.

The cold, wind, and snow won't be deterring this group who are answering the call of a rival fire department.  "The Edmonton Fire Department has run a successful campout for the last four years," says TJ Belluk, one of Winnipeg's campers, "and last year raised over $50,000.  We couldn't ignore the challenge."  Next week, campers from St. Albert, Alberta and Strathcona County, Alberta will also brave the wintry weather with campouts of their own.

We would like to encourage everyone to gain an awareness of neuromuscular disorders and give generously to this worthy cause.
